Reflections - Fair Game

A speaker at the Pennwriters’ Conference raved about Annette Dashofy’s Fair Game because it put the reader at the fair with the tastes and smells.

As I read, I smelled manure but didn’t taste the food—probably because I don’t eat fair fare. I reacted viscerally to the temperature, however. I sweated and panted with Zoe. Despite this being Annette’s eighth novel in the series, the story felt fresh and read smoothly.

Fair Game starts with a murder threat followed by a mysterious death. It ends with Pete proposing to Zoe. She whispers yes. In between Zoe debates selling her horse and farm to live with Pete in town, risks her life to help a 4-Her with his troubled parents, and contributes to solving the murder and mysterious death.

For Pete, these solutions involve technology. Abby, his new police officer, unlocks computer files and finds a tracking device on a cell phone.

I’m looking forward to the ninth mystery complete with a wedding for Pete and Zoe.
